Newsletter #4 How to Get Rich Quick!!!!! (Not Clickbait)

Lately, I’ve been pausing more. Watching the light fade in the evening. The leaves fall.. Driving home from work with my music on. Bingeing 90s Tom Clancy films (The Fugitive is still number 1, for now). Noticing.

These tiny moments, mundane to some, make me feel one thing: wealthy.

Not in pounds or possessions, but in comfort, freedom, and choice. In love. In luxury of the everyday kind.

It almost feels greedy.

So here’s my pitch… to get rich, you don’t need to acquire anything.

You just need to redefine what wealth means.

“Possession make you rich? I don't have that type of richness. My richness is life, forever.”

- Bob Marley

I feel rich without the assets or consumer goods we’re told define success.

Because the richest parts of life can’t be delivered next-day.

Like meaningful relationships. Watching the sun set. Eating a home-cooked meal slowly and mindfully. Expressing gratitude for another day. The power of the internet – delivering perfectly curated reels right to my feed. The sound of raindrops on the window.

I don’t need an expensive meal out at a restaurant. The nicest meals I have had – are at home! Call me simple, yes. But don’t call me a liar until you’ve tried my creamy pumpkin spinach pasta with pine nuts.

A BBQ in the garden with friends? Priceless.

The first coffee of the morning. That ritual. That moment. The dawn of another day - a gift not everyone receives.

Maybe it’s my allergy to spending money on anything non-essential (sidenote - surfboards are classed as essential), or maybe it’s just the tight Yorkshireman in me. But I truly feel I have all I need.

Sure, I’ve got wants. Tattoos. Skateboards. A Mazda Bongo (van conversion underway). But I know they’re wants, not needs. And if I couldn’t have them? I’d still be OK.

We are already wealthy and rich in this comfortable, simple life.

We live in a time of abundance. If you’re reading this, you have access to more than most humans in history ever dreamed of. Just 500 years ago, we’d be ploughing fields for 14 hours a day, hoping not to die of the plague by 25.

Many people across the world are still struggling today with circumstances and hardships we cannot possibly comprehend.

So yes, your bank balance might not sparkle. And if this hasn’t altered your outlook, then I have indeed failed you (sorry lol).

But look up. Look around.

You don’t need to dream of riches. You’re already rich beyond your wildest dreams.

Autumn oak leaves in warm sunlight

Autumn (without the fall) Falling leaves. Darker nights. Colder mornings. Autumn used to hit me hard. It’s a time of year I have always struggled with. I blamed it on being a ‘summer baby’. Born in June = thriving in the sun. But maybe it’s less about birthdays and more about being an outdoors person. Summer gives me light, time and the warmth to do what I love. An extensive period of fun and adventures. I remember a morning back in April where, given the unbelievable temperatures we had, I...

“So, what do you do?” Ah yes, the classic icebreaker—designed to fill silence whilst often triggering a mini existential crisis. I lump it in with other surface-level spirals like: “What’s your five-year plan?” “Where’s your career heading?” “Who do you want to be when you grow up?” Why are we so obsessed with planning? Forecasting every step? Mapping out life like a step by step recipe? Scott Stillman, in I Don’t Want to Grow Up, writes about how animals live for the day – every day. Some...

#1 Growing with Gaia I recently watched a video of a man explaining a concept I haven’t encountered before – the idea of Gaia. If you’re curious to explore the video yourself, you can find it here: Gaia - YouTube video Gaia is not so much a philosophy or belief as it is a realisation. It feels like one of those “ah ha!” moments, where something suddenly clicks and the world makes a bit more sense. Gaia is a beautiful recognition of the interconnectedness of beings, objects, moment, and atoms...
